Many teens suffer from boredom on a daily basis; however, research shows that there are actually fun things to do in the Metro Detroit area! If you’re a teen currently suffering from nothing to do on a nice day, the cures are listed in the following:

  1. Go bowling at Detroit’s historic Garden Bowl! I bet you didn’t know Detroit was home to the oldest operating bowling alley in the U.S. Built in 1913, the Garden Bowl have become Detroit’s very own Rock-N-Bowl. Located on Woodward Ave. in Midtown Detroit, bowlers are able to play on glowing neon lanes, while experiencing a bit of Detroit’s past.

  1. If bowling isn’t enough, enjoy a movie with it. When bowling sounds good, but not good enough, see a movie at Emagine Theater! Emagine Theater is a Michigan-owned luxurious theater that provides amazing comfy seating, and even a bowling alley. There’s nothing better than seeing a good movie and then bowling with friends afterwards.

  1. Figure out what in the world is feather bowling! Okay, okay I know this is the third straight mention of bowling; however, this isn’t what you think it is. Feather bowling is actually a Belgian pastime sport that not many know about here in the U.S. Lucky for Michiganders, we live not far from two feather bowling facilities. The game involves rolling a wooden disc across a lane and getting the disc to get as close to the feather as they can. “I went feather bowling at Bath City Bistro. There are these wheel things that you roll down a lane, and try to get close to this feather. It’s hard to explain but it was fun and different. I’d recommend it because it’s something different to do,” Isaac Culos ‘16 says on his experience. You can feather bowl Bath City Bistro, located in downtown Mt. Clemens, or Cadieux Cafe in Detroit.

  1. Ponder the meaning of art at the DIA. The Detroit Institute of Arts, located on Woodward Ave. in Detroit, is a place where all ages can enjoy beautiful the works of many well-known artists. The DIA even displays the work of local artists on the rise. “I loves the DIA because it’s not just any old art that people think of as boring. There’s such a wide variety of things you can do down there, and it’s just cool to go and see art from all different periods of time,” Emily Chapman ‘16 comments on why she loves the museum.

  1. Wander an island on Belle Isle! From a conservatory, to an aquarium and even an immense amount of trails, Belle Isle is the perfect close-to-home nature park. “Belle Isle has a lot of things you can do there, like all the trails. It’s best to go there when the weather’s really nice and they have the big fountain on. The water looks best in the summer too,” says Brandon Agents ‘16 on the park. The park provides a getaway from the city-suburban area and walk through Michigan’s native wildlife. The island park is located on the Detroit River, between Michigan and Canada.

  1. Get your dose of vitamin Z at the Detroit Zoo! You can’t ever be too old to go the zoo! Giving everyone an opportunity to see wild animals, the zoo will never not be amazing. There are even a handful of interactive exhibits that give animal lovers a closer look at wildlife such as the famous Polar Bear tunnel. There’s also the Kangaroo walk that actually allows you to roam with kangaroos! The Detroit zoo is located on 10 mile road in Royal Oak Michigan.

  1. Dive deep at the Sea Life Aquarium. The Sea Life Aquarium located at Great Lakes Crossing is Metro Detroit’s first ever aquarium. There you can take a place into ocean life where you’re able to see 5,000 different sea creature and even interact with some! “There was a lot of different animals and my favorite were the seahorses! You can also touch the crabs and starfish. When you finish the whole exhibit you’re able to go through it all again at no charge,” Reneh Gelladuga ‘16 comments on her deep sea adventure.

  1. Take a stroll on Detroit’s Riverfront. When looking for a more relaxing but active afternoon, the Detroit Riverfront is the place to be. With small venues here and there, lighthouses and nature conservatories along the way, the Riverwalk will take you to many places along the Detroit River. Be prepared to take a journey and make memories along the way!

  1. Go to open mic night at The Dovetail! The Dovetail is a small cafe in Warren on Hoover Rd. where you can sit, relax, and listen to local musicians take the stage. Board games and books, with various lounge chairs are all scattered across the cafe as well, creating a very relaxing environment. “I think it’s a really fun and inviting place where people of all ages can go to and be comfortable without the fear of rejection. It’s both upbeat and new-age, as well as calm with a hint of vintage,” says Chloe Volner ‘16, describing the cafe perfectly.

  1. Sit back and enjoy the show, 1950’s style at the Ford Drive-in! The Ford Drive-In, located in Dearborn on Ford Rd. is the perfect date night location for friends or couples! See a movie without ever leaving your car, as if it was the 1950’s all over again!
