Fall brings beautiful colors, colder weather, haunted houses, and the best of all – apples that make cider. Cider mills are always the best part of fall! When September hits, I can’t wait to visit a cider mill, especially Yates in Rochester.

There are several cider mills that are open for business in the metro area. Westview, Blake’s and Yates are some of the most common choices. Blake’s is definitely NOT the best. It’s always so busy and it’s too commercialized. “I like all the construction that they did to make it look nicer,” Ashley Smith ’15 disagrees. “Their cider tastes more genuine than any other cider,” Smith comments. But I still maintain that Yates is A LOT better.

Yates is the best cider mill. The cider mill looks like a big barn, which gives you that feeling like you’re in the country. They are also less crowded. “The nature trails and donuts are my favorite part about Yates,” Sarah Greger ’15 agrees. Yates has a nature trail that goes along a river, which makes it so peaceful. It’s all about the nature, not what there is to do. After you make your purchases, take a leisurely stroll with your friends and family while you enjoy the sound of the rushing water and colors of changing leaves.

Not only is Yates better because of the look and the nature, but their cider and donuts taste amazing. It’s always fun to just enjoy some cider and donuts with family and friends. Always order extra, because who doesn’t want to take extra donuts home. Their prices are affordable and they offer several items beyond donuts such as apple pies, caramel apples and other yummy treats.

Yates also has other shops on its site. They have tents specializing in apples, pumpkins, caramels, and other fall fun items. There is a small petting zoo with goats and sheep which offers some entertaining moments as well. If you have a little sibling, there are pony rides and magic shows on the weekends.

Everyone should go to the cider mill sometime this fall, especially Yates. Enjoy some cider, donuts and fun with your family/friends. Yates is open Monday – Friday from 7 am to 7pm and weekends 9am to 7pm.
