The Holidays are just around the corner and times are tough. For a lot of Warren Woods families it warms their hearts to receive a food basket from the Warren Woods Tower counseling office. “This is our sixth year handing out baskets,” Mrs. Joann Anderson stated. They order the food baskets from a local Warren Church.

It costs around $35 to make each basket. Instead of doing a secret Santa in the counseling department, the money that would normally be spent on frivolous  gifts is spent on the magnanimous baskets that provide food for the families that need them.

The families that qualify for the baskets are picked by the counselors out of a long list of students. This year Mrs. Joann Anderson and Mrs. Tammi Marx, the heads of this project, have ordered around 50 baskets for the families in Warren Woods that could use some assistance around the holidays. The families will be able to pick up the baskets on December 17, 2011.

They do take donations from the public, however not many people know about this essential cause. This year they received a donation of $350 from STUCO, and a $100.00 donation from Interact. “All of the money that’s collected goes to make the baskets,” Mrs. Anderson said. They would be happy to receive donations from the public so they would be able to help more families that are in need of a little assistance throughout the holidays.

The baskets contain two 1lb. Boneless Chicken Breasts , two 1lb. 80/20 Ground Beef, a 2lb. Boneless Ham, 1lb.  of Frozen Broccoli, 1lb. of Frozen Green Beans, 1lb. of Frozen Mixed Peas, a Dozen Eggs, 5lbs. Potatoes, 3lbs. Carrots, 2 Sweet Potatoes, 1 Can of Diced Tomatoes, 1 Package Navy Beans, 1lb. Rice, 1 Can of Corn, 1 Package of Gravy Mix, and 6 Chicken Bouillon Cubes. This is sure to help a lot of families over the holidays!

Last year they made around 74 food baskets for Warren Woods families. That’s a lot of food! All of the food that was raised during the “get off your can and fight hunger” campaign that Renaissance Club put on will be donated to help make the food baskets and be sent out to some families that might be in need of them. These bags will be given out with a $25 gift card to Meijer.

If you’re looking to donate you can stop in and see Tammi Marx or Joann Anderson in the Counseling office at any time during the school day!
