It’s that magical time of year — Christmas! At the entrance to many stores you see Red Kettles and bell ringers collecting money for the work of the Salvation Army. You pull out your wallet and drop in some money as you enter or leave the store. Giving makes people feel good but volunteering as a ringer really brings an even more personal perspective to giving. I’ve volunteered as a Bell Ringer outside of a Kroger store in Macomb Township and it was a wonderful experience because you’re helping people in need, bringing people together, and it does something to you personally.

Salvation Army Bell Ringing is an awesome experience because you’re helping people in need. Some people say if you’re in need it’s your own fault. However, it’s not always the person’s choice to be struggling. Every dollar helps make so many meals for the holidays. The Red Kettle Campaign for the Salvation Army brought in $2.4 million dollars in 2015 between Thanksgiving and Christmas. This money is used for charity work such as youth tutoring, meals for the needy/elderly, and residences for low-income adults.

Bell Ringing brings people together. My mom and I have been ringing bells for the Salvation Army for 6 years. We ring for a four hour shift and usually get a lot of people to donate to our kettle. People are always happy to donate. Last year we had over $400 in our kettle alone. We always say every dollar helps. Mom and I even donate, along with several friends. Bell ringing truly brings our community together.

Although, it’s often cold when we ring it’s not about us. Mom obviously as a mother gets concerned that her daughter gets cold. She says, “Are you cold sweetie?” I always reply, “It’s not about me Mommy!” My kindness often makes Mom get emotional. She really loves her daughters. Mom is really proud of her daughters.

You are probably wondering by now how I got involved. My mom and I just go on the website and picked our time. We only go out one time. It’s a special day for Mom and I. We normally do Friday before Thanksgiving.

“Some people don’t ring bells but they still do their part. I don’t stand out in the cold but I would put money in the bucket,’’ Mrs.Borcyz, WWT secretary said.

In conclusion, Bell Ringing is an amazing and awesome experience that brings people close and it blesses you.  If you are feeling inspired to ring, check out the Salvation Army website to start the volunteering process.
