During a recent staff meeting, surrounded by his colleagues, Mr. Jason Dougherty was awarded the title of WWT Teacher of the Year. The announcement was met with thunderous applause from Dougherty’s fellow staff members.  Dougherty, a social studies teacher, is known by his students to be strict, demanding on assignments, yet fair and a great role model.

His work ethic also demonstrates his commitment in that he doesn’t even have a prep hour. He teaches Behavioral Science and five United States History classes which means he works with no breaks.

Mr. Dougherty’s department colleague was instrumental in putting forward Dougherty’s name for consideration. “I nominated Mr. Dougherty because he is an amazing teacher and is good with kids. Also because he is my mentor,” Mr. Henshaw said.

Dougherty has been a teacher for 16 years and his experience shows. He graduated from the University of Michigan and has his master’s degree and to this day is still learning to better his teaching skills so he is able to assist his students in the best way possible.

Throughout his years at WWT, the 2017 High School Teacher of the Year has been involved with many things. For numerous years  he has been the advise for the Record Club, Gay Straight Alliance, and the Asian Club. He has also been a class adviser twice, for the Class of 2006 and Class of 2012.

“It’s nice to be recognized, but these awards aren’t just for the teacher. It is more for our school and department,” Dougherty said. “I wouldn’t be able to do it without my students or co-workers,” he added.

He was inspired to become a teacher through coaching a competitive rowing team and his school years. During high school, his teachers pushed him to become the teacher he is today. Dougherty loved social studies and history. “When I first became a teacher I was like holy crap and overwhelmed but I love it,” Dougherty said.

Dougherty never has a dull moment. He enjoys to see kids progress and see what their potential is. “I think it is amazing when kids finally realize how much they are actually worth and their potential,” he added.

Many students admire him and appreciate all he does. Although his grading is tough he gets everyone ready for their future. “I have had Mr. Dougherty in the past for both freshmen and sophomore years. I enjoy his class although he is difficult, it is what a lot of teachers need to do,” Jinjer Washington ’18 said.

“My favorite part of teaching is seeing kids grow, no day is ever the same,” Dougherty said.
