Jobs in the engineering and designing fields are opening up frequently these days. Recently, a group of juniors, seniors and students from Enterprise were able to visit a company plant here in Michigan that specializes in Designing and Engineering for MFG Day.  The selected students visited RCO Engineering Inc., where they were able to see how parts are made for new projects. Even car parts for vehicles that the public does not even know about!

For those who do not know, MFG Day is a day dedicated to manufacturing and designing and learning more about the fields. “RCO Engineering provides students with an opportunity to a variety of global industries,” Julie Geyman, WWT Counselor, and Lead Coordinator for MFG Day said.  RCO has also designed and manufactured many projects such as the Google car and modifying the BTW from GM.
For many students, the most interesting part of the trip was learning about the machines that make the parts. At RCO, machines are programmed to design and create small parts to a bigger picture. Once machines are programmed, they pretty much do all the hard work for you, making the manufacturing industry grow even more. “It’s interesting to watch people, robots, and machines put together products in a very quick manner,” Shawn Quinn, Engineering Manager for RCO said.

The industrialization fields are in need of a larger future workforce to take the place as the future generation as those who are already working are retiring more frequently. “I also hope this event sparked student interest to look for similar opportunities, like manufacturing day, in other fields that they may be interested in, even if these other fields have nothing to do with manufacturing,” Quinn added.

As we all know, Detroit is one of the most famous cities specializing in Manufacturing and the hope that a new generation will take on that title is growing stronger. “I hope students got a glimpse of what a manufacturing facility looks like and appreciated that there are viable career options in our neighborhood,” Geyman expressed.
