Winter! The most magical time of the year! Sparkling snowflakes and the smell of fresh pine trees all around, and the snow-covered ground illuminates the night sky. But what on earth are you supposed to do with all these winter wonders?! Here are a few ideas of what you can do for fun during these chilly winter months.

Go sledding

There are numerous places that you can go sledding; whether it’s down a small hill in your neighborhood, or a giant hill, like the one at thirteen and John R. Personally, that’s my favorite place to go sledding. Climbing up the hill might be a bit of a hassle, but the outcome is so worth it. Flying down that hill makes you feel infinite. Grab a few friends and take a little drive over there. The best part about it? IT’S FREE. No charge for parking, sledding or anything. Just bring your own sled and you’re ready to have a blast. It’s an exciting, inexpensive thing to do with your family and/or friends.

DIY Christmas Decoration

There are so many creative things you could do with household items. One would be these beautiful ice marbles. They’re easy and inexpensive to make. All you have to do is fill up a balloon with however much water you want (depends on how big you want your marbles to come out), add some food coloring of your choice, and set them outside to freeze. As soon as they’re nice and frozen, peel the balloon off and voila! You’ve got some beautiful decorations to set in your yard. The best part about these is they melt right away when it gets warmer out.

Ice skating

What a popular winter activity. There are plenty of places to go ice skating around here, the closest probably being at the Warren Civic Center. Skate rental is only $3, skate sharpening is $4. They offer great opportunities, like free skate days. Boys skate for free January 7th, January 28th, and February 11th. Girls skate for free December 17th, January 24th, February 4th, and February 25th. Every other day general admission is only $4. Bring along your grandparents and they get in for only 2$! You can go skating here Monday-Thursday, 3-9 p.m., Friday, 3-10 p.m., Saturday, 11 a.m.-10 p.m., and Sunday, 11 a.m.-8 p.m. It doesn’t matter if you’re a pro at ice skating or not, this is a great place to go when you want to have a good time with your friends or family.

Visit some beautiful places

Winter time truly is magical. All around people decorate their houses with gleaming lights. Ryan Paluszewski ’14 says Partridge Creek is a beautiful place to visit. She says she loves going places where rich people live because they always have lots of decorations and lights. A few other places you could go to visit and see some spectacular decorations would be Downtown Royal Oak, Jefferson Street, and Rochester. In downtown Royal Oak, they decorate their buildings from the ground to the roof, and walking down the street makes you feel like you’re in a Christmas wonderland. You don’t even need to go shopping to see the wonderful lights. Window-shopping is great, especially when you’ve got a great view.

Indoor Activities

Don’t like the frigid cold air? There are plenty of things you can do inside! What’s winter without a big mug of hot chocolate topped with fluffy whipped cream?! It’s a holiday favorite, along with decorating gingerbread houses and baking cookies with your family. Or you could even bundle up with all the cozy blankets you have and have a movie marathon with your best friend or significant other. There’s a whole world filled with possibilities!

Simple things to do

People always say it’s the little things that count. Catching snowflakes on your tongue and drawing pictures in the snow are two examples. You could also get some friends together to have a snowball fight or build a snow fort. Who cares if you’re in high school! Just because we’re teenagers now doesn’t mean we can’t have fun too. I suggest all of you check out the view from the top of a parking structure. It’s unlike anything else, and it’s free! You can see a wide range of beautiful snow-covered land. These things may not seem like much, but they do give you feeling of happiness inside.

Winter is a lovely time of the year. Living in Michigan, we get a lot of snow during the winter, so make the most of it. Think about it; some people have never seen snow in their entire life. Appreciate it, and just have fun!
