This year, Warren Woods Tower is getting an exciting new addition to the main gym. A 12×18’ American flag is now proudly hanging off of the gym’s rafters, courtesy of the committee for the golf alumni outing. “The golf outing has been happening for 25 years and the committee chose to donate the flag because they wanted to leave their mark before new leadership ascended,” Jan Sander, WWT’s Athletic Director, said.

Mrs. Checkle, Mrs. Marx, Bob Machota and Jan Sander stare in awe at the newly installed flag.

The golf alumni outing is run by a select committee made up of Ron Wilson, Ralph Weibel, Grace Oberski, Robert Tyler, Dick Rohde, and Dave Edwards. Each of these committee members have at one time or another been a faculty member of WWT.

The flag will now become an integral part of all events occurring in the gym. Before all games, tournaments, and invitationals, the flag will be lowered for the national anthem. It is electronically powered and is controlled by a remote which Ms. Sander is in charge of.

“We have a betting pool going, and we’re betting on how long the remote’s going to last. My money’s personally on Jan losing the remote within a few uses,” joked Bob Machota, a worker within the district who helped oversee the project.

Contracters from Johnson & Wood, a mechanical contracting firm, finish installing the brackets which hold the flag in place.

The actual flag was mounted in the center of the main gym September 9th by mechanical contractors from the firm Johnson & Wood based in Burton. On September 13th, the electrician came in and hooked all of the wires up and tested the flag.

“I’m very excited about our school having this flag. I believe that we’re the first school in our district, possibly even the state, to have something like this in our gym,” Ms. Sander said.

If everything goes according to plan, she hopes to officially unveil the flag during the volleyball quad that is occurring September 20th.
