Midterms are nothing new to upperclassmen, but for freshmen, midterms could be one of the most terrifying weeks of their lives. Many freshmen haven’t had time to develop study habits that are strong enough to guarantee a good score. Even for those who have good study habits, midterms could prove to be a new and scary challenge. “I felt stressed. I was terrified that I’d fail. It was an overwhelming experience,” Mariah Cottrell 15’ said.

The week of midterms and finals can also be the most stressful weeks of the year for any class. Between finishing obnoxiously long reviews and spending hours cramming the night before the exam, all students struggle during this week. For freshmen, this new experience could be especially stressful. “I studied constantly for a couple of days,” Hannah Pauling 15’ admitted.

While some students were fretting relentlessly about midterms, others were less challenged by them. “They were easy to me,” Justine King 15’ said. They also didn’t pose much of a challenge to Mariah. “It’s not that I thought they were hard, they were just extremely time consuming,” she said.

Another experience that is new to freshmen is class changes. Upperclassmen are accustomed to, or even look forward to changing their classes second semester, but for freshmen, it can pose a challenge. Besides the fact that they have to search to find their classes all over again, memorizing the new schedule itself can also be an issue for some students. “I was very nervous to be starting new classes since I didn’t know the teachers or the group of students,” Hannah said.

Some freshmen find this change refreshing or even exciting, however. Savannah Burbank said she wasn’t nervous at all to be starting her new schedule. “I’m excited, even though most of my classes stayed the same,” she said.

The semester change bears an interesting change for all students. This year’s freshmen are both apprehensive and excited for the changes that are to come to their daily lives. Regardless of these mixed feeling, students are looking forward to the new semester.
