Recently I visited the famous Ethiopian restaurant, the Blue Nile. It was honestly one of the best restaurant experiences I’ve ever had. The décor was truly amazing; they really make you feel part of their culture. However, there may have been a few issues that I found unpleasing such as the portion sizes, the cost and the very select varieties of food.

The Blue Nile had a very limited menu. I went in with an open mind thinking that there was going to be a variety of different foods. However, that was not the case. There are only two varieties, one being the vegetarian trey and the other being a meat trey. For those of you who may not know, I am not a big fan of spicy food and I typically decide against it. Everything was spicy! The lentils, the meat, the vegetables, even the cinnamon tea had a little too much cinnamon. Other than that, the food was incredible; just make sure to order some water! Mr. Silwanowicz is one of the only other people that I know that have been to the Blue Nile. “I believe that everyone should go and give it a try because it is so different. Just don’t try the yellow lentils,” Silwanowicz commented.

The cost was definitely outrageous. To get a tray full of vegetables and meat, it costs about $20 per person. Mind you, these trays have a small portion of each item and usually only takes about two minutes to eat everything on your plate. However, our waitress made sure that the trey was continuously refilled. “I liked it at first, but then I realized that it was too expensive for what you got,” Mr. Silwanowicz said.

Despite the problems, my favorite part about the Blue Nile would have been that I was able to eat with my hands. They gave me a hot towelette which smelt of laundry detergent, before and after my meal. “Don’t go with a two-year-old. They tend to eat and then lick their hands, and then touch the food again. Go with sanitary people,” Silwanowicz added. It was a tad bit messy but it was all part of the fun!

Although I enjoyed the scenery and the culture, I could not get past the spicy food and the price. Therefore I will not be returning to the Blue Nile. However, if you’re looking for somewhere unique and you enjoy taking risks then the Blue Nile may be the place for you. It’s located at 221 E Washington St, Ann Arbor, MI 48104 and opened from 5:00-10:00pm all week long. Just don’t try the yellow lentils!
