The Titan wrestlers are well on their way to another run at team states, after last years unforgettable gut-wrenching battle with multi-time state champs Lowell. As we approach the halfway point of the year, the Titans are proving to still be a top team to beat despite losing some key pieces last year. Tower as of today holds a record of 16-4, with their last loss coming against a very strong Detroit Catholic-Central team.

One key factor that plays a larger roll this year is senior leadership. The team is led by seniors Trey Barbour, Austin Frederick, Jajuan Lovejoy, as well as fellow upper-classmen Chaise Mayer ‘19, Keff O’connell ‘19, and Joel Radvansky ‘19.

Austin Frederick ‘18 shared with me that finding senior leadership isn’t that easy. “I believe (senior leadership) is a very important part to this team but it’s hard to find.” When asked what the team could do differently to remain successful especially against big opponents, Frederick stated “The biggest thing we can do is get the bonus points when they present themselves.” He continued, “We just gotta find the hunger, the energy, and the attitude that it takes to win and be on top.”

Although the Titans aren’t going to have the same undefeated regular season performance as last year, the outlook is still very bright for both the remainder season as well as years to come. I asked Frederick who he thinks is next up to lead this team in the future, and his answer was a promising one. “I think Joey Haynes ‘21 has what it takes. He’s got skill for his age, and is able to keep his cool and learns quick.”

Although the Titan grapplers have lost some talent due to graduating seniors, the resiliency and ability to do whatever it takes to win are the clear image that comes to mind when you think of Tower Wrestling. The rest of the season looks promising, and it’s safe to say it is definitely something to watch.
