Being abandoned since 2002, a successful implosion took place recently to destroy the upper portion of the Pontiac Silverdome to begin the process of removing it completely, something many people have been waiting on for years. This implosion caused the rest of the building to cave in on itself. Neighboring businesses and homes felt the area shake as the explosives were detonated.

Prior to the recent implosion a previous implosion was originally attempted, but things did not go as planned, as the building stayed the same. It was said that it was due to the placement of the explosives.

Although none of us here at WWT are old enough to have experienced any memories at the Silverdome, the structure has been home to many great moments and memories in Detroit sports that many of our parents and grandparents may remember.

There have been many iconic moments taking place in the stadium, varying from sports, to music, to entertainment and so much more. One of the most iconic moments was when the Silverdome hosted ‘WWE’s (then ‘WWF’) Wrestlemania III. This event was particularly known for one of the most iconic moments in ‘WWE’ history, when Hulk Hogan slammed Andre the Giant, in front of 93,000 fans to win the title.

Another sentimental memory that will remain in Detroit sports fan’s hearts forever is the 1997 game 16 of the regular season for the Lions. This game was special because running-back Barry Sanders rushed for 183 yards, tallying 2,056 yards that season, his only season in which he did that.

Many memories were made when the Silverdome served as a concert venue, hosting the likes of The Who, Led Zeppelin, Ted Nugent, and many more.

The Silverdome will be missed by all Detroit fans who’ve stepped foot in it due to all of the memories the building has been giving since 1975.
