Stress affects the life of high school students everyday. So much so that it affects their performance in school.  Adding all the homework, quizzes, tests, jobs, and after school activities it is hard for students to take time to relax.  A typical high school students’ day includes getting up early in the morning. Going to school and working for 6 hours on schoolwork. After this, any kind of job, after school activity, or even trouble finding a ride home could take up time. Even being healthy, the recommended hour of physical exercise a day may be trumped by work and school.

Stress can actually affect how much a student can remember. This is because you worry so much about what is stressing you out you don’t pay attention to what you just learned. “Stress can distract students, so they focus more on what they are stressed out about than their work.” Said Tower’s French teacher Mrs. Rydant. This proves that if you are stressing over an assignment, a test, or even a personal problem it can distract you from what your learning.  This leads to forgetting what you learned when the time comes.  “We have so many things to consider such as school, jobs, and mental health in general.” WWT student Ariel Bennett stated in an interview.  Think about it, how many times have you been up late studying or doing homework after practice and or work? Putting all this stuff together is like a giant weight on a student’s shoulders. Stress is such a big deal that I feel still isn’t completely noticed.  It has been more out in the open and people do notice it, but we need to notice it more.

If someone is over-stressed and it is affecting their school performance, then even just a person to talk to would help.  WWT assistant principal Mr. Fredlund noted, “there is not a single student that doesn’t deal with stress.” Everyone deals with it, I believe that there could be more support and awareness towards the problem. Some argue that it is because they have their own problems to worry about.  They can’t take the time to worry about someone else’s problems. I argue that if you help someone else, even just by being kind to them, you can impact them and yourself positively. Stress can be overcome and just a little bit of notice could help someone improve their school performance and their lives.
